Tassels and bead amulet

In Western societies, jewelry is usually worn for personal adornment only. Outside the Western world however, deeper magical or spiritual connotations are one of the main purposes of jewelry. Caught between fear and fashion, and largely protective in nature, jewelry is often worn as an amulet or talisman. The belief that beings like jinns and angels exist and are a force to be reckoned with permeates everyday life in a way that is hard for outsiders to understand. Even those who live in the cities and are surrounded by modern technology such as television and internet will avoid travelling through the desert at night for example, for fear of encountering such spirits.Seen in this light, Middle Eastern jewelry in the form of an amulet or a talisman – which is nearly all of it – is considered perhaps even more of a necessity by the people who wear it than a watch or a wallet. It is inextricably linked to religion and popular belief. The shape of an amulet, a specific inscription, symbolism used – are all are related to faith in one form or another.
