INowadays, jewellery is usually worn for personal adornment only. A few decennia ago however, deeper magical or spiritual connotations were one of the main purposes of jewelry. Caught between fear and fashion, and largely protective in nature, jewelry was often worn as an amulet or talisman. The belief that beings like jinns and angels exist and are a force to be reckoned with permeates everyday life in a way that is hard for outsiders to understand. Seen in this light, jewellery from the Arab world in the form of an amulet or a talisman – which is nearly all of it – was considered perhaps even more of a necessity by the people who wore it than a watch or a wallet. It is inextricably linked to religion and popular belief. The shape of an amulet, a specific inscription, symbolism used – are all are related to faith in one form or another.
