The techniques used to make traditional jewelry developed over many centuries and have not changed significantly since antiquity. There are various stages in jewelry making. First, the metal has to be made malleable. It is then hammered flat, and cut, bent, made into wire or otherwise shaped into a desired form. This is then decorated using various techniques such as enamelling, embossing, engraving, granulation and the addition of beads or other inlays. The separate components of a jewelry item may be fused or soldered together, or connected using leather, chains or cotton thread. Casting is also used, although less often, since it is used for costly, solid pieces that require a lot of silver.
