Bahariya
Jewelry from the Oasis Bahariya is reminiscent of Berber jewelry from North Africa, but shows influences from the Nile Valley and Nubia as well. Specific for Bahariya is the disc-like pendant. The shape and decoration are found in this oasis only. The pendant is generally not made of silver, but of white metal, and engraved with figures characteristic for Bahariya. The disc is not a zar-amulet, although it resembles the zar-amulets: it is much larger and the decoration is not found in zar-amulets.
The decorational schemes however do resemble drawings that accompany spells in Coptic magical papyri. Given that these discs were produced by two silversmiths, who were Copts, and that the oasis of Bahariya has a longstanding Christian tradition as well, it might very well be that the silversmiths used forms and shapes they knew to be of importance in these amulets. An article dealing with the possible link between Coptic magic and the Bahariya-amulets can be found here.
